The Rite of Spring

I would urgently counsel you to leave at the interval, because what follows it is simply drivel: Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring, stompily conducted by Gardner and comprehensively trashed by the Galway-based troupe Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, under the direction of Michael Keegan-Dolan.

Rarely have I seen anything so silly or inept. A witchy old hag and a bearded village elder presides over an orgy of bog Irishry so crudely clichéd and faux as to be racist: when the boys and girls aren't stripping off or rutting, they're running about pretending to be wild animals, very much on nursery-school choreographic principles. At the end, naked men get a thrill from putting on flowery dresses. I kept wondering what Father Ted would have made of it all.
